Dave Oneill is a name you will hear associated with house music in the area on quite a regular basis. It seems everyone who knows music knows him or knows of him, be it through Buzz Records, the shop he ran in High Wycombe for some time or through going to a party he either played at or organised. Quite a few people have got quite a few diverse stories of Dave (which I wont go into now!) but needless to say he has made his mark.
Deep Natural Rhythms caught up with him:
DNR: > So, how did it all start for you? Who or what was it that attracted you to the music?
DaveO: > I really started to get into music properly at about the age of 14. (Thats a long f***ing time ago!). As long as it had soul, I was pretty much into it. You have to remember that "House Music" was not around then but the genres of music that would one-day produce "House Music" as we all know it now, certainly were. I was buying early Hip Hop, Disco, Soul and Funk.
DNR: > What drove you to start Buzz Records? Tell us about that experience.
DaveO: > My passion for music never faltered and in December 1991, I opened Buzz Records. I had always wanted to own my own shop and with the guidance and encouragement of a few key people within the scene (namely Mr Dave Piccionni who owns Black Market records and Azuli Records) I bit the bullet and went for it!!
Just 3 months previous to Buzz opening its doors for the first time, there had been a major development in London clubland - The Ministry of Sound was born. Now we are not talking about the commercially run, super club of today. This signalled a major development within the House music scene. Sure, there were all the illegal dos, and various clubs were holding House nights all over the place but this was sooo different. This was a dedicated club for House music only; it opened at midnight through until 9am, had NO liquor licence, flew in all the major US jocks and blew yer f***ing socks off!! That first sound system really did blow you away! Here I heard how House music should be played by the likes of Frankie Knuckles, Tony Humphries, Ted Patterson, Kenny Carpenter EVEN Larry Levan. There really is too many to mention. What you must remember is that although these names are relatively well known now, back then some of these guys had never left the USA! By now I was totally hooked and it was great hearing all these wicked tunes one month and then being able to sell them a few months later!!!
DNR: > Who have you played with & where have you played? Tell us a bit about that.
DaveO: > I have been very lucky with my DJing career. I have managed to play with some of my favourite DJ's and also at some of my favourite nights. Most memorable include: Buzz Records VIP parties at the Ministry (every two/three months for about 3 years) Garage City (with DJ Disciple, Victor Simonelli, etc) Release the Pressure (with Kenny Carpenter, etc) Live mix on the Bobby and Steve show on Kiss FM, Am / Pm record label tour, Various Buzz and Soultogether do's spanning nearly 15 years!! Phuture Trax party with MAW in the house - very nerve racking! The infamous Soultogether Boat Parties (come once and I guarantee you will be HOOKED!!! )
DNR: > Who are your main influences? Artists/labels...etc
DaveO: > Favourite artists and record labels include - Soulshine, Soundmen on Wax, Basement Boys, Clean Cut - (watch out for this one!), Morehouse, Fallout, Kenny + Su Su Bobien, Stephanie Cooke (Kennys wife), Blaze, Jamie Lewis, Frankie Feliciano, Dennis Ferrer, etc etc
DNR: > Where can we catch you next?
DaveO: > I will be playing at all forthcoming Soultogether gigs, Soul Heaven at MOS and also at Soultogether in Ibiza, Revolution in Newcastle, Spirit bar in Salisbury, etc
etc.
