Lets face it, Sunday nights are often boring affairs. You may have looked forward to the roast dinner but now that’s finished all that lays present in you’re mind is the spectre of Monday morning and going back to work! I thought I was gonna be doomed to another evening of Heartbeat, that was until I picked up a flyer in my local record store. The night was called ‘The Lounge’ and the flyer promised me an evening of soulful, funky house music and plenty of cheap booze deals. Sounded too good to be true, you mean I can get drunk and listen to quality music on a Sunday? Felt it was well worth a try!

When I got there first impressions were good. It was about 8:30 and there was already a nice little crowd gathered. The DJ was playing some real deep and soulful sounds - inducing much head nodding from the crowd. The venue was a decent size and it had a medium size dance floor, the perfect ingredients for a particularly messy night out! Thought it was only polite too introduce myself to the DJ and compliment him for his smooth set. His name was Scotty Dawg and he had some serious skills. Below is a list of some of the tunes that he dropped,
: - Allister Colling – Hold on (J Cutler Mix), Sandy Riviera – Changes, George Levin – When I’m with you, Louie Vega feat Julie McKnight – Diamond Life, Alison Limerick – Where Love lives, Kaskade – What I Say, Nuyorican Soul – It’s alright I feel it.
Like I said, some fine House cuts!

By 10:00 the atmosphere was building nicely. The bar was filling up, as was the dance floor. This was mainly due to DJ Pierre John upping the tempo of the set. This guy was funky! I tried to stay seated and keep my cool image but that was blown as soon as I heard the bass line of Michael Watford – ‘For you’ creeping into the mix. That track induced some serious dance floor mayhem. The sound system was loud but clean and that made the set sound even better! Other tracks that DJ Pierre John played included: - Copyright – We get up, Aquanote – Only Love, Erro – Change for me, Eddie Amador – House Music, Kenny Bobien – Gave me Love, Basement Boys feat Jasper St Co – Lift every Voice. These where the tracks I remembered, it was enjoyable to hear a funky house set that stayed well clear of any cheese.

Once it got to bout 10:45 there was a real buzz about the place. The crowd where very friendly and I felt totally relaxed even though I didn’t know hardly any one in the bar. That’s a rare quality for a night to have and one they should be very proud of. I had a chat with DJ Pierre during his set, he turned out to be one of the promoters for the night. He was very genuine and I could tell that he lived the music. His aim for ‘the Lounge’ was to play good music in a friendly atmosphere – I’d say he was on the right lines!

It came to about 11:30, normally on a Sunday I would be getting ready for bed at this time, but instead I was grooving to the classic tracks being played by Mr Funky Gee. Both me and the rest of the crowd where truly feeling what Gee was playing. His set consisted of Old skool funk, Disco and classics. I remember hearing Stevie Wonder – Jammin’, Sir Duke, Another Star - Loved it, I’m a big Stevie fan! Funky Gee also played Michael Jackson – Burn this Disco out, Chic- Le Freak, Arthur Conley – Sweet Soul Music, Sly and Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield, Roy Ayers, James Brown and many tunes I recognised but wasn’t sure what they where called. Infact I heard so many of my favourite all time tracks I was having a ball!

12:30 arrived far too quickly; time to go! The night was great fun, a cool musical Oasis in the heart of High Wycombe Town centre. I would recommend it too anyone, not just House fans but fans of good music in general. No cheese, just pure aural bliss! Remember – you can always call in sick the next morning, the boss will understand if you tell him/her that DJ Pierre played MAW – To be in Love and you just had to stay for that tune!
